Living in Costa Rica for a year, the Dominican Republic for a semester and long-term trips to Nicaragua, Ecuador, Cuba, El Salvador, Peru, Haiti, Mexico, Panama and Guatemala showed Chris Mercer many sides of the world he would never forget.
His fascinating, sometimes harrowing, adventures have become the basis for three documentary films: All that Glitters, a look inside the small scale gold mines of Nambija and Zaruma, Ecuador; When Pigeons Fly, interviews with children in the streets of the Dominican Republic and a profile of a home that takes them in; From Goochland to Havana, a “video conversation” between Spanish I students in rural Virginia and college level art students in Havana, Cuba.
Chris' mission is to share his passion for Latin America with the goal of creating multilingual, global citizens who face modern challenges with a strong foundation of cultural awareness, confidence and compassion.
He lives with his wife and two children and teaches Spanish full-time in his hometown of Richmond, Virginia.
